Are Newborn Photography Sessions Safe? A Guide for Ottawa Parents
One of the most common questions parents ask before booking a newborn photography session is whether the experience is safe for their baby. It’s a completely understandable concern. During those first few weeks, your baby’s comfort, health, and well-being are your top priorities.
As an Ottawa newborn photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of families throughout Ottawa, Kanata, Stittsville, and surrounding communities. Safety is always the most important part of every newborn session, and every pose, setup, and photograph is created with your baby’s comfort in mind.
Baby-Led Sessions Come First
Every newborn is different. Some babies sleep deeply, while others prefer to stay awake and observe the world around them.
Newborn sessions are never rushed. The session follows your baby’s pace, allowing time for feeding, comforting, diaper changes, and cuddles whenever needed. A calm baby is always more important than achieving a particular pose.
Safe Posing Practices
Many parents see beautiful newborn portraits online and wonder how babies are positioned so comfortably.
Professional newborn photographers use gentle posing techniques designed specifically for newborns. Babies are never forced into positions that feel unnatural or uncomfortable.
In some cases, advanced poses are created using composite editing techniques, meaning multiple images are safely combined during editing rather than requiring a baby to support themselves in a potentially unsafe position.
Maintaining a Comfortable Environment
Newborns are happiest when they are warm, comfortable, and secure.
During newborn sessions, the studio environment is carefully prepared to help babies remain calm and relaxed. Soft blankets, gentle positioning, and a warm room help create a comfortable experience while keeping baby cozy throughout the session.
Parents Are Always Involved
Many parents are surprised to learn how involved they are during the session.
Parents remain close to their baby throughout the entire experience. Whether helping with soothing, feeding, or simply providing reassurance, your presence helps create a calm environment for both baby and photographer.
Safety is always a collaborative effort.
What Happens If Baby Won’t Sleep?
A common misconception is that newborn photography only works when babies are asleep.
While sleepy newborn images are beautiful, awake babies often create some of the most memorable photographs. Tiny expressions, curious eyes, and early personality can make for wonderful images.
Sessions are designed to adapt to your baby rather than expecting your baby to adapt to the session.
Why Ottawa Families Trust Professional Newborn Photography
Many Ottawa, Kanata, Stittsville, and Barrhaven families choose professional newborn photography because they want an experienced photographer who understands newborn safety and baby-led posing.
Working with newborns requires patience, experience, and an understanding of infant comfort. The goal is always to create beautiful photographs while ensuring your baby feels safe and secure throughout the session.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session in Ottawa
Welcoming a new baby into your family is an exciting and emotional time, and preparing for your newborn photography session should feel simple and stress-free. At Little Wagon Photography, newborn sessions are designed to be calm, relaxed, and baby-led so families across Ottawa, Kanata, and Stittsville can enjoy the experience while capturing timeless memories of these early days.
If you’re wondering how to prepare for your newborn photography session, here are a few helpful tips to make the experience smooth and enjoyable for both baby and parents.
When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Photography Session?
Newborn photography sessions are ideally scheduled within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are still naturally sleepy and curl easily into those cozy newborn poses. However, beautiful newborn photos are still possible after this stage, and every baby is unique.
Most families reserve their session during pregnancy to ensure availability around their due date. If you haven’t booked yet, don’t worry — there is always an effort to accommodate newborn sessions whenever possible.
If you’re still planning your session, you can also read our guide on when to book a newborn photographer to help you prepare ahead of time.
What Should Baby Wear for Newborn Photos?
Simple is always best for newborn photography. Neutral tones, soft textures, and timeless fabrics help keep the focus on your baby rather than distracting patterns or bright colors.
Many newborn sessions include wraps, blankets, headbands, and simple accessories provided by the studio, so parents don’t need to worry about bringing elaborate outfits.
A few helpful tips include:
Dress baby in loose clothing before the session to avoid marks on the skin
Bring extra diapers, wipes, and bottles if needed
Keep clothing simple and comfortable
Avoid large logos or bright patterns
The goal is to create soft, natural images that will remain timeless for years to come.
What Should Parents and Siblings Wear?
Family photos are often included during newborn photography sessions, so choosing coordinated outfits can help create a clean and timeless look.
Soft neutral tones such as cream, beige, light grey, soft blues, or earth tones tend to photograph beautifully. Instead of matching perfectly, aim for colors that complement one another.
One of the most common concerns parents have is whether their baby will sleep or stay calm during the session. The good news is that newborn sessions are designed around your baby’s needs and pace.
To help your baby feel relaxed during the session:
Try feeding baby shortly before arriving
Keep baby awake a little longer before the session if possible
Bring a pacifier even if baby does not regularly use one
Don’t stress if baby needs breaks for feeding or comforting
Newborn sessions are never rushed. Patience and flexibility are always part of the process, creating a calm environment for both parents and baby.
What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?
Newborn sessions are typically relaxed and baby-led, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and comforting throughout the session.
Sessions may include:
Wrapped newborn poses
Natural baby-led posing
Parent and sibling portraits
Detail shots of tiny fingers, toes, and expressions
Family images together
The goal is to safely capture genuine moments and connections while creating timeless images your family will treasure for years.
Studio vs Lifestyle Newborn Sessions
Some families prefer a studio newborn session, while others love the relaxed feeling of an in-home lifestyle session.
Studio newborn photography offers:
Professional lighting
Styled setups and props
Controlled temperature and environment
A quiet, calm space designed specifically for newborns
Lifestyle newborn photography focuses more on natural family interaction within your home environment, capturing meaningful everyday moments.
Both styles create beautiful memories, and the best option depends on your family’s preferences and comfort level.

Most families book during the second or third trimester to ensure availability around their due date.
What if my baby arrives early?
Session dates are flexible and adjusted based on baby’s arrival.
How long does a newborn photography session take?
Most newborn sessions last approximately 2 hours to allow time for feeding, soothing, and breaks.
Do parents and siblings participate?
Absolutely. Family and sibling portraits are always encouraged during newborn sessions.
Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to coordinate multiple people while keeping everyone comfortable. The good news is that family photos don’t need to feel overly styled or stressful.
Here are some simple tips to help your Ottawa family photography session feel natural, timeless, and relaxed.
Choose Neutral & Soft Colours
Soft neutral colours tend to photograph best because they keep the focus on your family’s connection and expressions. Creams, beige, soft browns, muted greens, dusty blues, and warm earth tones all work beautifully for outdoor and studio family sessions.
Avoid:
neon colours
bright logos
busy patterns
overly matching outfits
Coordinate Instead of Matching
Rather than dressing everyone in identical colours, try choosing tones that complement each other. This creates more natural and visually balanced photographs.
Example:
creams
soft denim
warm beige
muted greens
Dress for Comfort
Children and babies are happiest when they feel comfortable. Choose clothing that allows movement and feels natural rather than stiff or overly formal. This also works great for maternity sessions.
This helps sessions feel:
relaxed
playful
authentic
Consider the Season & Location
Ottawa weather changes quickly throughout the year, so it’s helpful to dress for both comfort and the session location. Ottawa’s changing seasons can also help influence outfit choices, from cozy fall textures to light summer colours.
For fall sessions, layered textures and warm tones photograph beautifully. Summer sessions tend to work best with lighter fabrics and softer colours.
What Photographs Best for Babies & Newborns
For newborn and baby sessions, simple outfits and neutral wraps tend to create the most timeless look. We provide wraps, blankets, and simple styling options during newborn sessions. After booking a newborn session, we always provide clients detailed guidelines on how to prepare for your newborn session.
Don’t Stress About Perfection
The most meaningful family photos come from connection, interaction, and genuine moments — not perfectly matching outfits.
The goal is for your family to feel comfortable, connected, and natural during your session.
If you’re planning newborn, maternity, baby, or family photos in Stittsville, Kanata or anywhere in Ottawa, we’re always happy to help guide outfit choices before your session.
When to Book a Newborn Photographer in Ottawa (2026 Guide for Parents)
When to Book a Newborn Photographer in Ottawa
If you’re expecting a baby, one of the most common questions is: when should I book a newborn photographer in Ottawa?
The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your second trimester, usually around 20–28 weeks. This gives you the best chance of securing a spot on the calendar while still allowing flexibility around your baby’s actual arrival date.
Why Timing Matters for Newborn Photos
The first few weeks with a newborn pass very quickly. During this stage, babies are often sleepier and naturally curl into the gentle poses parents love in newborn photography.
Booking your newborn session early helps ensure availability and gives you time to plan your session without added stress once your baby arrives.
Many Ottawa parents reserve their session during pregnancy so everything is ready before baby’s arrival.
When Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken?
Newborn photos are typically taken when your baby is between 5 and 21 days old.
During this stage, babies are usually sleepier, easier to settle, and more comfortable in gentle newborn poses. This timing also helps create those soft, curled-up images many parents love.
That said, every baby is different. If your baby arrives early, needs extra time at home, or you simply book later than planned, beautiful newborn photos are still possible.
Why Should You Book Before Your Baby Arrives?
Booking before your baby arrives makes the whole experience easier.
When you reserve your newborn session in advance, your due date is added to the calendar. Once your baby is born, we choose the final session date based on your baby’s arrival and how everyone is doing.
This means you are not trying to find a photographer, compare packages, and schedule a session while recovering and adjusting to life with a newborn.
What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?
This is very common, and it is completely okay.
Newborn sessions are planned around your due date, but the final appointment is flexible. Once your baby arrives, we adjust the session date as needed.
The goal is always to create a calm, safe, and relaxed experience for both baby and parents.
When Should I Book If I Want Maternity Photos Too?
If you are planning both maternity and newborn photos, it is best to book earlier in your pregnancy.
Maternity sessions are usually photographed between 28 and 34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully showing but you are still comfortable enough for photos.
Booking both sessions together also makes planning easier and helps create a consistent look between your maternity and newborn galleries.
What Happens After I Book?
After booking, we will send you guidelines on how to prepare for your newborn session. This includes important details such as what to bring, when to feed your baby, and what to wear.
Our goal is to make the experience feel simple and stress-free, especially during those first few weeks with your new baby.

Essential Tips for Navigating Your Baby’s First Month: Advice from Little Wagon Photography
The first month with a newborn can feel overwhelming, exciting, and exhausting all at the same time. Many new parents in Ottawa wonder how to adjust to sleepless nights, feeding schedules, and the many changes that come with welcoming a new baby into the family.
One thing I often hear from Ottawa parents during newborn sessions is that the first month feels both incredibly long and incredibly short at the same time. The days can be exhausting, but before you know it, those tiny newborn stretches and sleepy cuddles have already changed.
As an Ottawa newborn photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of local families during those early weeks and understand just how quickly this special stage passes. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate your baby’s first month while creating meaningful memories you’ll treasure for years to come.
Tips for navigating your baby’s first month.
Don’t forget about self-care:
It’s easy to get caught up in caring for your newborn, but remember to take care of yourself as well. Take short breaks when you need, nap when your baby naps, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from family and friends around you.
Create a Routine:
While newborns don’t follow a strict schedule, establishing a basic routine can create a sense of structure for both you and your baby. Try to create regular feeding times, nap schedules, and bedtime routines to help your little one feel content and safe.
Capture the Moment:
The first month with your newborn is filled with precious moments that you’ll want to remember forever. Don’t forget to capture these special moments through photos and videos. As experts in newborn photography in Ottawa, we recommend scheduling a professional photo session to preserve these fleeting memories.
A cozy and comfortable environment can help soothe your newborn and promote better sleep for everyone. Keep the nursery dimly lit for nighttime feedings, keep the ambience calm, and swaddle your baby to mimic the feeling of being in the womb.
Trust Your Feelings:
As a new parent, you’ll receive plenty of advice from well-meaning family, friends, and even strangers. While it’s important to listen to others, it’s also important to trust your instincts and do what feels right for you and your baby. You know your baby better than anyone else!
Celebrate all the Milestones:
From your baby’s first bath to their first smile, every milestone is worth celebrating. Take plenty of photos and write down notes to commemorate these special moments. Consider scheduling a milestone photo session with Little Wagon Photography to capture these milestones with our help.
Talk with Other Parents:
Parenthood can feel isolating at times, especially during the first few months. Connect with other parents in your community through mommy-and-me groups, online forums, or social media. Sharing experiences and tips with other parents can provide much-needed support and camaraderie.
Seek Help When Needed:
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling with postpartum emotions, don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional healthcare provider. Your mental and emotional well-being are just as important as your baby’s.
By following these tips and enjoying every moment, you’ll navigate your baby’s first month with confidence and ease. And when you’re ready to capture these precious moments through professional newborn photography, remember that Little Wagon Photography is here to help.

Because every coo, every yawn, and every adorable expression is a piece of your family’s unique and beautiful story waiting to be told.
Wardrobe Matters: How to Dress Your Baby
As you start the delightful adventure of capturing your baby’s precious moments, what to wear for family photos matter. Picture this: soft fabrics that caress your baby’s delicate skin, colours that complement their natural glow, and outfits that effortlessly showcase their unique personality. When it comes to dressing your little one for a photoshoot, comfort reigns supreme. Opt for fabrics that let them move freely, allowing those adorable baby movements to shine through.
Keep it simple and timeless – think pastels, neutrals, or soft patterns that won’t distract from the star of the show: your precious bundle of joy. Avoiding overly busy patterns ensures that the focus remains on your baby’s expressions and the genuine moments captured. Remember, these photographs will be cherished by family throughout for years to come, and a classic, timeless look will stand the test of time, always bringing you back to the heartwarming memories of your baby’s early days. So, indulge in the joy of selecting outfits and poses that reflect the purity and innocence of your little one, creating a visual masterpiece that mirrors the love surrounding them.
Feeding and Napping Strategies
Navigating the world of baby photoshoots is an adventure full of heart-melting moments, and ensuring your little star is well-rested and happy is vital to capturing that pure magic. Consider it a dance between the baby’s natural rhythm and the photographer’s lens. Begin by planning the photoshoot around your baby’s feeding and napping routine, ensuring that those sleepy smiles and blissful expressions are ready to be captured. A well-fed and well-rested baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby makes for the most enchanting photographs.
Timing is everything – schedule the shoot when your little one is naturally more relaxed and joyful. Embrace the pauses for those adorable yawns or tiny stretches, turning every moment into a work of art. Remember, these photographs are not just snapshots; they are timeless treasures that reflect the joy of your baby’s early days. So, let the feeding and napping sessions become part of the photoshoot magic, creating a gallery of memories that will warm your heart for years to come.
One thing I often notice during Ottawa baby photography sessions is that babies tend to do best when parents don’t worry about keeping everything perfectly on schedule.
Sessions are always designed to move at your baby’s pace, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and breaks when needed.
Ah, the magic of adding a personal touch to your baby’s photoshoot – it’s like sprinkling stardust on those captured moments, turning them into cherished memories. Consider infusing your photoshoot with props that tell a story, reflecting the uniqueness of your little one. From snuggly blankets to tiny toys that hold a special place in your heart, each prop becomes a brushstroke in the masterpiece of your family’s journey.
Think beyond the conventional and embrace items with sentimental value – perhaps a handmade blanket from grandma or a toy passed down through generations. These meaningful props not only add warmth to the visual narrative but also create a timeless connection to your family’s history. So, explore the possibilities, let your creativity flow, and watch these personalized touches transform your baby’s photoshoot into a gallery of memories that speak volumes about your family’s love and joy.
Communication with the Photographer
Embarking on a baby photoshoot adventure is a collaborative dance between you and the artist behind the lens. Every baby is unique, so communication is the secret ingredient that turns each click into a masterpiece. Embrace the beauty of clear and open communication – share your wishes, dreams, and preferences. Does a particular style of photography tug at your heart? Are there distinct moments or angles you hope to capture? Let your photographer in on the unique nuances of your family dynamic. Discuss any special considerations – perhaps a specific time when your baby is most animated or a particular prop that holds sentimental value.
This dialogue ensures that the photoshoot becomes a tailored experience, a canvas where your family’s story unfolds seamlessly. Trust is the foundation of this collaboration, and by fostering an environment of open communication, you’re not just capturing moments; you’re co-creating a visual symphony that echoes the love, support, and joy within your family. So, let the conversation begin, and watch as your shared vision transforms photos into timeless memories.
Backup Plans for Unexpected Situations
In the world of baby photoshoots, flexibility and preparedness are the unsung heroes, ready to turn unexpected twists into charming moments. When it comes to unforeseen situations, having a backup plan is like having a secret magic wand. Be it a change in weather or a mood shift in your little one, discuss contingency plans with your photographer. Maybe there’s an indoor location nearby if the weather takes an unexpected turn, or perhaps a favourite toy can be the perfect mood lifter.
Flexibility allows the unexpected to unfold gracefully, turning unplanned moments into delightful and fun surprises. Embrace the unpredictability of the moment, knowing that these spontaneous twists are what make your baby’s photoshoot uniquely yours. So, as you venture into the world of capturing magic in pictures, remember that flexibility is the key to turning every unexpected situation into a beautiful chapter of your family’s story.

Great items to start with your newborn photography business
It’s hard not to fall in love with newborn photography. Who doesn’t want to take photos of squishy little newborn babies for a living? And yet, starting your own business can seem like a daunting task. The good news is that it doesn’t take much to start your own photography business.
Of course you will need to learn how to operate a camera and how to pose a baby safely (that is the most important part of your job!) But once you’re familiar with your camera, lighting and have some experience handling newborn babies and posing them safely, there are just a few essential items to get you started.
A posing beanbag or something similar to lay baby on. You will need somewhere soft and safe to put baby on. There are specific beanbags out there that are made for photographers. These are easy to clean and easy to stuff to your liking. I have been photographing babies for almost 14 years and have had the same beanbag for all these years. It’s an investment into your photography business that will serve you well. Unfortunately I don’t remember where I purchased mine (it was so long ago!) but it looks something like this link.
2. A posing fabric or blanket. There are many lovely photography vendors out there that sell posing fabrics. But if that’s out of your budget, all you need is to go to a fabric store and get 2 yards of a stretchy, soft fabric for baby to lay on. You can even cut a piece of it to use as a matching wrap! Another option is to use a soft blanket that is long enough to cover the space. Just keep in mind that you want something soft that won’t be prickly on baby’s skin.
3. A backdrop stand. You will need something to clip your fabric to. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a stand. When I photograph newborns in client’s homes, a lot of time I will use the back of their chairs to clamp the fabric so it looks nice and smooth. There are photographers that will skip this step and fix it in Photoshop later. But if you’re new at photography, this step will help you save time when editing.
4. A basket or two! Just like with posing fabrics, there are many vendors that sell beautiful baskets/bowls to pose baby in. The good thing about buying through a vendor is that you know it will be the perfect size to pose a newborn baby safely in. That being said, you can also find some cute boxes/bowls in local stores that will work. The main thing is to make sure that these are safe and that they don’t have any sharp edges that could harm baby.
5. Wraps. As I mentioned above, if you purchase fabric at your local fabric store you can always cut a piece of that fabric to wrap baby in. Newborn babies love being swaddled. It makes them feel safe and comforted and it’s always my go to when babies are awake or not very content. Once you have a few wraps, there are many ways to wrap baby in order to get a large variety of photos.
Besides your camera, lighting (natural or not) and knowing how to pose babies safely, these are some of the basic items that will help you get started. If you’d like to learn more, we offer newborn photography classes that you can find here. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions!
Outdoor Newborn Photography – Ottawa & surrounding areas
Little Wagon Photography shares tips on photographing newborn babies outdoors in the Ottawa area.
As more and more people get vaccinated and Covid starts slowing down, we are thankfully able to start photographing outdoors once again. The reality with newborn sessions is that it usually takes place indoors. Photographers have a lot more control of the lighting, warmth, etc when photographing newborn babies in the studio. However, thankfully it is Summer in Ottawa and the weather has been helping us! This has made many of us step out of our comfort zone and take newborn sessions outdoors. 🙂
Ottawa has many beautiful parks to take advantage of and I am so glad that so many of my clients have been as excited as I am to photograph their little ones outside. As we do indoors, I still take a variety of photos of baby alone as well as with parents/siblings (depending on the package). The main difference is that when photographing newborns outside, I do mostly photos of them wrapped to keep them warm and content. Here are some tips to make those newborn sessions more successful when venturing out in nature:
1 – Keep baby warm! Newborns settle best when they are warm and swaddled. And even in warm summer days, outdoor photography can bring a light breeze that may affect baby’s temperature. So while naked photos of babies are adorable, I choose to keep them swaddled for most photos, switching wraps and styles but keeping them warm and content throughout our session.
2 – Make sure they are fed prior to the session. This goes with indoors and outdoors. A fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby. 🙂 I always suggest to parents that they feed baby prior to leaving the house. This will give them a chance to fall asleep in the car and arrive at the location ready to go. 😉
3 – Have mom/dad hold baby. There are so many different poses that you can do with baby while being held by mom/dad or sibling. And with nature as your background, you just can’t get it wrong. But choose the location wisely! Make sure there are no distractions behind them and choose areas that will compliment the photo.
4 – Make sure to choose shaded areas. There are 2 reasons for that. First, babies’ skin are very sensitive to the sun and it is super important to keep them safe at all times. The second reason is that direct sun will not only end up waking them up, it will also not help the look of your photos. Open shaded areas are always best regardless of the photo session you are doing. The exception is if you are photographing towards end of day. That beautiful golden hour allows us to photograph clients in open areas without any problems.
5 – Check the forecast! Just as we like to keep the studio warm for newborn sessions so that they stay sleepy and comfortable, it is important that you only photograph newborns outside if the weather will cooperate. Anything below 24 degrees celcius is a bit too cold for me. Even if it’s warmer, make sure you check to see if it will be a windy day or even if there’s a chance for showers. Although it takes a bit more planning to make it work, it is very worth it in the end. 🙂
Although I have mostly photographed newborn babies indoors in the comfort of my Stittsville studio, I must admit that I have fallen in love with outdoor newborn photography in Ottawa. Nature provides such beautiful backdrops and it’s hard to compete with that.
